Home Design Information

Welcome to the design information page.  Our goal is to provide guidelines and suggestions for ADA accessible homes to be referenced by designers, contractors, and anyone else interested or involved in the design of these homes.  We will be adding vignettes, plans, and specifications for each area of a home to illustrate the day-to-day needs of a disabled person.

People in wheelchairs cannot move freely about in most kitchens. Islands become obstacles, counters and cupboards are usually out of reach, and appliances and hardware  can be awkward to reach and designed for those that may not have difficulties operating controls.

The kitchen is the center of family activity and should be a convenient, safe and accessible place for all. Width clearances, shelf heights, front-load and operable appliances and lever hardware should be considered when designing a kitchen.

It is often difficult for those who are wheelchair-bound to access a typical bathroom.  Even if the doorway is wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair, the vanity, sink, and towels are typically out of reach.  A look in the mirror only allows a small glimpse of the crown of the head.  The bathroom often feels restricted and closed in.  The toilet is often placed in a tight corner, making it inaccessible.

Grab bars make it easier to move from a wheelchair to the toilet and back again.  Reachable shelves and fixtures and ample floor space to navigate a wheelchair are necessary.
